The Right Kind of Democratic Response to the Katrina Disaster
Donna Brazille is a political consultant who managed Al Gore's Presidential run in 2000. She wrote this op/ed piece in the Christian Science Monitor.
It has the right tone at the right time.
There will be time enough for blame later. And there will be more than enough to go around from New Orleans officials not launching a mandatory evacuation or using idle school buses to evacuate the poor who didn't have another way out to FEMA political hacks who weren't qualified for the jobs they were needed to do and didn't listen to those with experience who from recent reports were telling them it was go time and were ignored.
FEMA has to be reformatted. One change that needs to take place is that if Americans are dying, FEMA needs to have the power to act...regardless of state's rights or the purview of local officials. When people start dying, the United States of America needs to be taking care of its own. This doesn't have anything to do with politics.
It doesn't matter if you are rich, poor, white, black, etc...if people are dying and they can be saved, ACT! Ask for forgiveness for the toes that get stepped on later...and while we're at it screw the people whose toes get stepped on, because if you are standing there with people who are alive and well because you acted and if you hadn't they'd be dead...that's all the justification you would need. That's all the American people would need.
The last line in Donna Brazille's op/ed from the CSM is too good not to quote here and remember she is a Democrat.:
I like her. When is she going to run for office?
Save the Gulf Coast!
Give Blood!
And get ready for Hurricane Rita, she's headed this way.

Mr. President, I'm ready for duty. I'm ready to stir those old pots again. Let's roll up our sleeves and get to work.
I like her. When is she going to run for office?

Give Blood!
And get ready for Hurricane Rita, she's headed this way.
