The 43 Days of Daytona - 32nd Place in 2005
Over the 43 days leading up to the Daytona 500, I'll be doing a short review/preview of the Top 43 Drivers of 2005.
----------------
Scott Wimmer
#4 - AERO Exhaust
Scott ran a full season last year in the #22-Bill Davis Racing-Catepillar Dodge. All 36 starts coming in the same car. He zeroes in all the categories; Tops 10's, Top 5's, poles, and wins. His average start was 27.5. His average finish was 25.8. He finished 32rd in points. His winnings for 2005 were $3,682,980.
This season he will run in the Morgan McClure-AERO Exhaust Chevy #4. Whether this turns out to be a lateral move instead of a move up or down remains to be seen. If he had managed to hang with the #22 Catepillar team, he would have benefited from having Michael Waltrip come on as a teammate this year in BDR's #55, but...spilled milk.
Wimmer landed in this ride as a 3rd choice. His star is definitely not on the rise as it once was when he landed the #22 Catepillar ride that Ward Burton was fired from a couple of years back. Todd Bodine turned down the #4 after Mike Wallace decided to move on. Travis Kvapil took the #32 Tide ride instead of the #4. Wimmer has a lot to prove...it's past time he gets to it.
Will sponsorship be big enough to allow the team to field a car every week? AERO Exhaust has experience in the Grand Am and AutoZone Elite series, so sponsorship should be solid especially with associate sponsors like Lucas Oil on board.
Do I think he could go win a championship? No. Let me repeat from the Travis Kvapil profile, the era when a single car team could win a championship is over.
Do I think he could win a race or two and have a good season? No. I'm sorry to say it, but I do not believe that Scott Wimmer has the right stuff. If he gets out there and proves me wrong, I'll be more than happy to eat my words and say "good for him", but I doubt I'm going to be put in that position.
