Tell Me the One About the Economy Improving Again...

All of the following headlines have appeared during November 2005:

GM to cut 30,000 jobs, close 9 plants
---------------------------------------
Ford emails about 4,000 more job cuts
---------------------------------------
The Tribune Company[which publishes major newspapers in Los Angeles and Chicago] cuts 1,100 jobs
---------------------------------------
Delphi to cut 24,000 jobs
---------------------------------------
Hewlett Packard lays off 15,300
---------------------------------------

Looks to me like the energy industries' profits are whitewashing some dark things in our economy...not to mention those miraculous new jobs that are being created at...McDonalds, KFC, Walmart, and Burger King...

How many computer nerds does it take to sell a burger and fries?

How many auto plant assembly line workers does it take to fry chicken?

How many former newspaper personnel does it take to stock the shelves at Walmart?

I question the accounting practices being used to pump up employment and job creation figures that aren't so great.

Economy Side Note 1: I wonder if there is a resource that tracks jobs that are being outsourced.

I called TXU Electric, now called Atmos Energy, about an issue a couple of months ago...

I ended up talking with a very nice customer service rep who told me the issue would be resolved as soon as they could confirm all the information with their billing and accounting people...in Poland.

Economy Side Note 2: There should be some major job openings in the New Orleans area...if they decide to rebuild the city...and if they can get people to come back.

FEMA is going to screw around with this permanent temporary public housing and these displaced persons involved are going to stay in their new cities.

"Permanent temporary public housing" is not my term. I heard a FEMA rep use it on NPR this morning talking about the policy that they have implemented to move the evacuees out of current shelters and hotels/motels into "permanent temporary public housing."

The same rep said that if local ptp housing wasn't available that the Feds would move the evacuees again to wherever they could be housed...

Shouldn't the next time the evacuees get moved be back to the New Orleans area where they can start working to help rebuild their city and their economy?
