The 43 Days of Daytona - 39th Place in 2005
Over the 43 days leading up to the Daytona 500, I'll be doing a short review/preview of the Top 43 Drivers of 2005.
----------------
Kevin Lepage
#61 - Peak Fitness Racing
Lepage ran in 21 races last season for different teams. He ran the #66 for Peak a couple of times over the year. The #66 has changed its number to the #61 and Kevin is scheduled to be in the car for the complete season...pending sponsorship.
He finished 39th in points He pulled 1-Top Ten. His average start was 30th. His average finish was 30th. His winnings for 2005 in the NEXTEL Cup came to $1,774,790.
Two big questions about Lepage and this team.
Will he be in the car for the balance of the year? I'd say, depending on the answer to question 2, he's got a 75% chance.
Will sponsorship be big enough to allow the team to field a car every week? Last season, they ran a group of sponsorships out there. Vassarette, Peak Fitness Clubs, Cabellas, Vote Kilgore for Governor, Arbor Mortgage, JaniKing and EAS, all shared time on the #66. The Peak Fitness sponsorship isn't big enough for a whole season...same with the EAS sponsorship. I'm giving them a 40% chance of their being sponsorship money in place to allow them to run the entire season. If sponsorship keeps them out of too many races, look for Lepage to be out shopping for another ride.
Do I think he could go win a championship? No. The equipment isn't going to be at that level.
Do I think he could win a race or two and have a good season? No. See above answer.
