16,000 Fireworks...at Once

That's impressive.

Shame that the video didn't continue until the cops showed up. Or the older gentleman from down the street comes out in his yard and yells at them.

Now that would have been entertaining.

Wars and Rumors of Wars...

Wow!

An NFL Franchise Outside the U.S.

My money is on Mexico City. Makes more sense from an economic standpoint. The Mexico City games always draw big crowds. And there would be less direct competition to the franchise from pre-existing leagues, NFL Europe, Canadian Football League, etc.

If the NFL wanted to really blow it up big in Canada, they should try with the CFL the same thing that happened with the AFL. Of course with a 94 year history all its own, the Canadian Football League might not have any interest in being part of the NFL...of course...if they were...then they could have the Dallas Cowboys, the Indianapolis Colts, Oakland Raiders, et al, playing on their home fields 8 times a year...more if they reduced the preseason by a game or two and added a few additional games to balance the extra teams in the league...

Hmmm...

OH Hell No!!!

A bomb was found under a bridge in Ohio near Cincinnati.

Dammit!

Another symptom...

...of the leftist rise in Latin America.

Can't believe that Mexico is in this kind of trouble.

One more reason that the border has to be strengthened. The United States cannot depend on there being a stable and strong neighbor to the South who will honor the open border that runs between us...as if honoring that border wasn't already a sore issue with the multitudes who pour across it every day.

Hmmm...

Fellow students of history...does the term Maoist Peace Camp give you the willies like it does me?

The words...re-education...terrorist training...and brainwashing all jump to my mind.

Mark McGwire and the Baseball Hall of Fame...

Character and the shadows of steroids may keep Mac out of the HoF.

In an era where Pete Rose can't get in the Hall, Mac needs to stay out too...along with Barry Bonds when he becomes eligible.

In an HoF class that includes Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr., Mac need to sit.

Maybe apologize for actions detrimental to the game...that would go a long way toward assuaging the egos and consciences of the people who put their credibility on the line by voting for him to go into the HoF...course that same course of action might...might help Pete Rose as well.

Is that a Guitar in your pants...

...or are you just happy to see me?

I can't imagine.

A guitar...

No...that's not too obvious.

Just Us Cup -- Offseason Update

Lee Spencer talk the most improved teams in 2006.

I agree with all of these. The #31, 9, 8, and 43, all, improved dramatically in the '06 season and are positioned great for '07.

I look for next year's most improved teams to include a passel of Roush cars as they put their season in the shadows behind them.

Rest in Peace Dr. Jerry Bails

Dr. Jerry Bails passed away due to a heart attack. He was 73 years old.

Mr. Bails was one of the first comic book fans to look at the medium like it was going to survive and not be a hula hoop kind of thing.

He studied the history of comics and chronicled much of it. He worked on and published fanzines in the pre-internet era, which allowed comic book geeks like me to keep in touch with one another.

Bails founded Alter Ego before handing it off to Roy Thomas, before Roy became one of the most influential comic book writers of his generation. Click here for a Bill Schelly interview with Dr. Bails.

Today's comic book fans and those of the future owe a gigantic debt to Jerry.

Rest in peace, Doc.

You are The Wheel of Fortune

Good fortune and happiness but sometimes a species of
intoxication with success

The Wheel of Fortune is all about big things, luck, change, fortune. Almost always good fortune. You are lucky in all things that you do and happy with the things that come to you. Be careful that success does not go to your head however. Sometimes luck can change.

Ryan Newman Might Have Had a Hand in Helping Montoya's Night go up in Flames

I know, I know...NASCAR is about paybacks and such. But I don't see the value in wrecking a rookie on the circuit in his first start...(his second start?)...because he made a mistake...Newman was an idiot on this one. And he was just lucky that JPM was able to get out of the car...that was a whole lot of fire.

Bob Margolis's commentary on NBC's last NASCAR coverage and the end of their contract...

Sunday's race marked the end of the NBC broadcast contract with NASCAR. Good riddance! The peacock network single-handedly did more harm to NASCAR than any other broadcast partner in the sport's history by permanently alienating a good deal of the casual race-viewing audience with its incessant commercial breaks.
It took a dedicated race fan to be able to stick with, much less follow, the race through NBC's steady pattern of running five minutes of commercials between every five minutes of racing action.

Cadi and I couldn't agree more!!! NBC's NASCAR coverage sucks!!!

***

Okay, show of hands...how many of you remember Johnson's team getting caught CHEATING at Daytona and having Chad Knaus be sent to the sidelines for four races. Darian Grubb should get a lot, A LOT, of credit. He was the guy who took over as interim crew chief for those races and did the job while Knaus was gone.

And at the time, they weren't fined any points, though there was a monetary fine to go along with Knaus's suspension.

Thankfully, Johnson won by a wider points margin than would have usually been accessed had NASCAR fined him points. He won by 56 points over second place. The usual point penalty amount is 25 points.

With the way that Johnson ran the last month or two, I hope that NASCAR's inspectors were looking closely rather than looking the other way.

But thanks to that crap in the early season, I'm always going to wonder. And everytime Johnson goes to victory lane from now on, I'm going to wonder.

Roush's Down Season Staggers Toward Its Finish

Roush pulled the plug too early in the season on the crew chief changes. Jamie McMurray's slump never pulled up. Carl Edward's team didn't get around the new crew chief, though things do look much better with Bob Osbourne back on top of the pit box. Matt Kenseth still has a shot at Jimmie Johnson going into Miami. Greg Biffle is lost in the wilderness. Talk in some quarters is that the #16 might be a Yates car next season. Mark Martin will drive some Cup races next year, but he will be campaigning a Chevy for MB2/Ginn, how that will impact his Ford dealership is up in the air. None of the potential boys tabbed to takeover Mark Martin's ride look to be on their game. Roush had a hard season, but with Kenseth, there is still hope...but it's fading.

55 cars are entered for for the 43 slots to race at Homestead this weekend.

Yates #88...could be Jaques Villeneuve...could be sold to DEI...

Robot Chicken Rocks!!!

I picked up on the "Take it off slowly. Yes, that pleases me" line thanks to BAD Radio on the Ticket.

Here is the whole clip from Robot Chicken.

And the Sad, Sad Week Continues...

Jack Williamson died.

Mr. Williamson wrote one of the first science fiction novels that I read, Brother to Demons, Brother to Gods. I have read that book twice in the last twenty years and will likely be doing so again in the next couple of months.

He wrote a plethora of novels over his 98 years of life. His last book coming out in 2005. His 1938 novel Legions of Time showed people travelling back in time to try and alter the past and may have been one of the seeds that eventually bore the Terminator movie series.

He was a titan on the science fiction scene and he will be greatly missed.

Rest in peace.

Down Goes Colt McCoy...So Long Longhorns!

The repeat national title hopes went bust last night with Colt McCoy's shoulder.

At the start of the season with two freshmen QBs on the roster, I knew that this was a rebuilding year in the post-Vince Young era in Austin. I knew it. I kept telling that to myself. But, I was being swept along by it all.

We had a chance. Into the middle of November, we had a chance.

That's a lot more than a lot of schools had this season.

Now...we focus on screwing up Texas A&M's season, the day after Thanksgiving.

Let's go whoop those Aggies, boys.

We've got a suspect defense that gave up 45 last night and has left our offense needing to play catch-up all season. Something needs to be addressed on that side of the ball this offseason.

Man, This has been a Sad, Sad Week so far...
