Celebrity Speak #1 - India Arie and Ashley Judd
On National Public Radio, they are advertising an interview with India Arie and Ashley Judd. The two have some connection to fund raising for or raising awareness about the AIDS epidemic in Africa.
Arie stated in the commercial, "I honestly believe that if it were poor white people suffering, everyone would care more." The whole while Judd intoned in the background, "You go, girl" and "Tell it."
These kinds of statements perpetuate the stereotypes that they masquerade as crusading against.
In addition, the last damn thing we need is a singer and an actress taking the moral high ground and telling us that "white guilt" is to blame for the horrible epidemic that is sweeping sub-Saharan Africa. AIDS is a plague on mankind. The disease doesn't recognize race.
It's not like a cure isn't being sought by scientists of every race, worldwide, or that when it's found it will only work on white people.
And to suggest as the celebrities above did, that when people are dying, people in America don't care is a crock.
What about Latin America and the Caribbean?

And if high and mighty celebrities acting like the rest of us are heathens and cavemen pisses you off, skip the next CD that Ms. Arie puts out and the next movie that Ms. Judd appears in.
