There's no place like home...

This is just not right.

Judy Garland's Wizard of Oz slippers stolen...

That's just wonderful when we start stealing American cultural icons.

Calling a pair of shoes an American cultural icon seems odd to me too. But c'mon, it's the Wizard of Oz.

Be on the lookout for a thief in bright red, shiny slippers. He may be clicking his heels together and chanting out loud. "There's no place like home. There's no place like home."

Maybe he's going to trade them for a full tank of gas.

Celebrity Speak #2 - Jane Fonda

On a recent Diane Rehm show on NPR, Jane Fonda claimed she felt the guilt of her mother's child abuse from when her mother was a child, from twenty or twenty-five years before she was born. She felt that guilt was carried forward in the genetic makeup of people...so a parent's actions directly impact the next generation.

Hmmm, so guilt causes a genetic mutation.

Hmmm...BULLSHIT!

Parents failing to deal with guilt over things in their past may, MAY, pass it forward environmentally.

Genetics isn't voodoo.

I think Jane must've gotten into her brother's stash one too many times.

Celebrity Speak #1 - India Arie and Ashley Judd

On National Public Radio, they are advertising an interview with India Arie and Ashley Judd. The two have some connection to fund raising for or raising awareness about the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

Arie stated in the commercial, "I honestly believe that if it were poor white people suffering, everyone would care more." The whole while Judd intoned in the background, "You go, girl" and "Tell it."

These kinds of statements perpetuate the stereotypes that they masquerade as crusading against.

In addition, the last damn thing we need is a singer and an actress taking the moral high ground and telling us that "white guilt" is to blame for the horrible epidemic that is sweeping sub-Saharan Africa. AIDS is a plague on mankind. The disease doesn't recognize race.

It's not like a cure isn't being sought by scientists of every race, worldwide, or that when it's found it will only work on white people.

And to suggest as the celebrities above did, that when people are dying, people in America don't care is a crock.

What about Latin America and the Caribbean?

Before you make a donation to anyone check them out to make sure the charity is reputable. Click here to find out how.

AVERT, a UK-based AIDS charity

Act on your own morals.

And if high and mighty celebrities acting like the rest of us are heathens and cavemen pisses you off, skip the next CD that Ms. Arie puts out and the next movie that Ms. Judd appears in.

I've always preferred the classic Guardians line-up. Glad to see them featured here.

Doom's Earth. Hmmm. Transdimensional vortices? Time travel? The world of Emperor Doom? Hmmm, interesting.

I like Hollywood's reaction. Beware of Doom when he is overly polite and doesn't try to kill you. HA!

Asteroid in the middle of nowhere...with an altar on it...hmmmm.

The logic of giving the Book of Kells to one of the most evil men in history to guide humanity through troubled times seems odd to me. Why not send it to Tony Stark? Or Steve Rogers? Or Reed Richards? Cool idea and I'm sure all will become clear in time.

Time paradox/divergence/jolt makes Donger's head hurt. HA!

I wish more had happened in this issue. I recognize that it is a setup piece for whatever Doom is up to...unless he's legit...Nah!

Wouldn't the authorities raise hell and shut down a space shuttle launch by a private individual or corporation in downtown New York, even when the prime mover behind the op is a powerful and rich personage like Dr. Midas. Even in a world of superheroes, this seems over the top. Still its a damned cool scene.

Richards' reaction to Midas' hand gesture. Greatness. HA! Definitely not something that Dr. Doom would have done to him. Though Namor might have.

The whole launch and its immediate aftermath was a very well done series of scenes.

Kyle Rayner saving the day, even when he's been whipped in the crash. Excellent.

Wow! Plastic Man here. Plastic Man there. Wow! Gross! His reforming makes a good sister image to the Absorbing Man image from the earlier issue in the crossover.

Hate that Batman is a jackass to Kyle in a time of crisis...oh wait, heh, this is consistent with the Batman we have seen since about 1980. He is a jackass to almost everybody. If Wally wouldn't have been so out of it from the crash of the Cosmic Treadmill, it would have been nice to see him stand up to Batman for his friend.

Too bad Ronnie couldn't transform a Qwardian Firestorm would have been an interesting thing to have the League run into/go up against.

Hmmm...I think I know who just formed on the Scarlet Centurion's Dimensional Escalator...HA! I love that. Greatness.

San Francisco, National Disrespect

Warship to good home.

In a classless show of disrespect, one of the city supervisors in San Francisco has refused to take in the battleship Iowa which was sent to the west coast specifically to be displayed in the Fisherman's Wharf area.

So because this idiot disagrees with the war in Iraq, he chooses to dishonor the sailors who served on the Iowa during World War 2, Korea and the first Gulf War.

Pfhagh!

But before we write California off in total, two separate bills are in Congress now. One to authorize the ship to be moved to Stockton, who has already promised a dock, warehouse building for a museum, and parking area. And the other, which wants to open bidding on the Iowa to any California city that might want to be the battleship's new home.

San Francisco is a beautiful city. Shame that I wouldn't deign to shit on it now.

Too bad they didn't capture him and execute him live on Saudi television. The appeal of martyrdom wouldn't be nearly as strong if the potential recruit had to see one of their great leaders piss on himself as the rope tightened or the executioner's blade fell.

The Smoking Lamp -- Marvel 2000's Avengers #36

Smoking Lamp #47
++++++++++++++++++
The lamp is lit...
++++++++++++++++++

Imprint: Marvel 2000
Series: Avengers #36
Author: Curt Fernlund with Plots by Curt Fernlund and Chris Munn
Title: "Prelude: Two of JLU-2001 and Marvel 2000's JLA/Avengers Team-Up: Assembled"

The second paragraph is a great scene setter. Great description of the Himalayan fastness. It gives a wonderful feel to the story...especially as I bake and baste under hot Texas summertime sunshine.

Love the reference to Agamemno's Silver Age event. Using it as the reason for the Batman Protocols is a great idea, whether that is rooted here or in the mainstream books.

A frightening circumstance there when Zauriel seems to coldly consider Ra's as an instrument of God's will. Good stuff.

I love the way that the Prelude stories work as almost a flip book, with the part above the title and roster being JLA and the part below Avengers and vice versa in the next installment.

I like the Silver Surfer and Thor waxing eloquent in the shadows of ancient grandeur that makes these two cosmic beings speak in hushed tones. That's cool.

Wow! What happens to Blastaar is gross? Makes me wonder at the ebon bodies though? What are they? Where do they come from? Are they the Anti-Monitor's shadow demons? Hmmmm, curious.

Constantine and the Phantom Stranger appearing in the later half of the story seem out of synch with the flip book feel. They seem a very small island of DC-ness in the middle of the Marvel-dom section of the issue. And the story could have advanced apace without the two very short scenes. As scenes they are fine, but I don't think they fit here.

Love seeing the Absorbing Man in action. And like the way he is taken down. I've always known that he could reform himself, but the ICK! factor of having a liquefied piece of his shattered form slither across Ms. Marvel's boot was awesome. ICK!

The dead zone following Thor's dimensional wake is going to be a problem. I guess that means that the munchy shadow demons are coming to Earth direct instead of having to devour half the cosmos to get here.

Wow! Wakandan capital punishment in action. I like the way this was done.

I just question the killing off of Klaw and Blastaar in this one issue. Those two, while not being A-list villains, do still have an interesting story or eight in them, I would imagine. Of course, they are only as dead as anyone ever is in comics.

I don't know how I feel about Jan and Hank as bondage freaks. [shakes head] I just don't know about that.

HA! You can almost see Pietro's scowl as he tells Wanda to do as she wishes. HA!

I liked this and I really only have one major gripe. In the next issue blurb, you reveal who is behind the "scurrying little predators" rather than letting it roll out in the story. I was a bit disappointed by that. But on the whole it didn't impact my enjoyment of this issue, just steals a bit of the thunder from the next issue.

And I would have liked to have at least looked in on Midas and his Negative Zone portal floating over Manhattan since it was a focal point in the first Prelude.

All and all, a pretty good story. I liked it and am looking forward to more.

I give it 7.5 out of 10 cigars.

Happy Birthday Fidel...When's the Retirement Party

Fidel Castro turned 79 today.

He has no plans to retire.

That's because over the last half century plus, he's killed anyone who would be a viable successor. The ones left have no loyalty to him. He'd be strung up within a month of releasing the reins of power.

Either that or his retirement would be the trigger for a revolution.

Either way Castro is in jail or hanging from a gallows pole.

So, if you were an aging Latin American dictator who still held tightly to the reins of power and these were your options...would you let go?

Happy Birthday Fidel...no happy returns.

Stoned-eyed View

Oliver Stone recently announced that sometime in 2006, he is set to begin filming his vision of what happened on 9/11.

I have liked Mr. Stone's movies. Any Given Sunday, The People vs. Larry Flynt, JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, Natural Born Killers, and Platoon...all great films.

But I don't believe that Mr. Stone is the correct choice for this subject matter. His politics will bleed from every scene of the movie.

I can see this being a "Bad American" portrayal.

We in the United States don't need to see a "B A" steeped movie about 9/11. In fact, I would say that we don't need to see any movie about 9/11 for a good ten years or so. Its too fresh. Its too raw. We're still too close to those events for them to have any perspective and I don't think that Oliver Stone is the right person to be trying to spin that perspective.

It's not history yet. When you think about it, doesn't it feel like it could have been yesterday or last week.

If we lost our innocence as a nation with the close of World War 2 and the dropping of the Atomic Bomb, we began the emergence from our national adolescence in those smoke clouds billowing over New York City.

In time, history and historians will put the 9/11 attacks in context. It will be done by professionals who look at all the data. And they may not agree with one another about it. But the last thing we need is Oliver Stone playing conspiracy-monger on this subject.

It wouldn't surprise me if we see an announcement soon by a filmmaker taking on the story of this American tragedy as well, but from an opposing political view.

I think that the politicization of 9/11 by W, the Dems, or Hollywood is wrong.

Plainly and simply wrong.

POW! ZOOM! To the Moon...

$100 Million! To go to the Moon on a small cramped Russian spacecraft.

$100 Million! To spend between 12 and 21 days cramped up in a space that one astronaut described as like being in a Men's Room.

$100 Million! Some people have too much money.

Yes, its the moon. Yes, it would be cool. Yes, if I had the money to waste, I'd go.

But think of the extreme differences you could make in life on Earth for your family, friends and people you don't even know.

$100 Million! I think I could find something more comfortable to do with that kind of money.

Two weeks in a flying rest room doesn't sound very cool to me.

The Coup in Baghdad...And No One Cares

Sigh!

This is ridiculous.

Armed men took over the Mayor's offices in Baghdad.

The man who was Mayor ran and hid...to save his life, who can blame him.

The man who was Governor of Baghdad Province took over the seat.

The Prime Minister's office says "Oh well" and plans to take no action.

BLANK STARE!

BLANK STARE!

And we've still got soldiers there because we're bringing American-style democracy to these people...

BLANK STARE!

BLANK STARE!

An American Embassy spokesperson said. "...that since the previous Mayor had offered to retire due to economic reasons." He claimed he wasn't given enough money to run the city. He requested 1 billion dollars for his budget. They gave him 85 million. "His resignation will probably be accepted and the new mayor," re: Coup Leader, "would continue in office pending an official appointment by the Prime Minister."

Hmmm, I know we in the U. S. had some troubles with the 2000 Election process and all, but this just doesn't seem right to me.

The Grateful Dead broke up seven months after his demise...though they have gasped out a reunion tour or two since then.

There's some neat stuff on the site. Check it out.

I especially like the handprint t-shirts with his signature on the back.

Imprint: JLU-2001
Series: JLA #29
Author: Curt Fernlund with Plots by Curt Fernlund and Chris Munn
Title: "Prelude: One of the JLA/Avengers Team-Up"

Odd that JLA/Avengers begins with Reed Richards. Cool, but odd. And yes, before anyone jumps me, I know that he is a card carrying Avengers associate member.

Is this Mordechai Midas, the Iron Man villain, or another Midas character? Seems to share some characteristics with the early career of the Mordy.

"He took a long drag from his cigar, stale blue smoke roiling out of every orifice in his golden mask."

Cool visual...but he needs to buy a better class of cigar if its already stale. HA!

Oh-kay. Sort of creepy the way that Midas's relationship with his daughter is. No, not sorta creepy, let's go with very creepy.

And Count Nefaria...excellent!

The "Nefaria reminding Midas that he had fought the X-Men, Avengers and Thor" and "Midas reminding Nefaria that he had lost" would have been a great scene instead of being alluded while Midas is rudimenting on their relationship.

I like the way that you are weaving some of the detritus of the Marvel universe into the story. The old Iron Man armor bought on the black market, I would suspect. The StarCore shuttle recovered from the bottom of Jamaica Bay.

Talia invading the Watchtower for another chapter in the Batman Protocols. These seem to be playing big in both the mainstream DCU and in fanfic these days.

Loads of characterization.
